Obedience Lapbooks

I'm not sure how it happened, but I forgot to post our Obedience Lapbook!!  We got ours for free at Homeschool Share, and we used the resources at The Character Journal to fill it out.  This one was pretty intensive, it took quite a while.  

Big thing we learned:  We obey Immediately, Completely, and Cheerfully, otherwise it's not obedience.  (In other words, you can do what you're told, but if it's not cheerfully, it's not obedience.  Or you can do something cheerfully, and quickly, but if it's not completely done, it's not obedience.)

There was tons of writing-- copywork for different verses, we learned the Keys to Obedience, lots of definitions, things like that, even finding hymns about obedience.  If I do this one again, I won't use every resource, I'll pick and choose.  It was a lot for our kids.

These are our Ten Tests of Obedience.  There wasn't enough room here for the kids to write, but older kids would do just fine on them.

This was a great lapbook, and it did teach the kids a lot.  But I would definitely pick and choose what you need for your family, rather than trying to do it all like we did. ;)

Butterfly Award

This is our Butterfly Award Lapbook!  I didn't make this one up on my own, I found it at Homeschool Share. 

This is the cover, isn't it pretty???  Used a ton of ink, though...

The kids have studied Butterflies before, but they still learned a few things!  Here are some of the books we filled out.

And this is our Butterfly Craft, a colorful butterfly made of torn origami paper.  (I couldn't find tissue paper at the store I was shopping at...)

The kids are going to be using these lapbooks next week.  They'll be giving a presentation for the students at Big Horn Christian School for their Spring Week of Prayer.  They'll be showing the students how butterflies can show us about God's love, and being reborn in Christ.  

These Adventurer Awards are a wonderful way to incorporate Nature Studies into your homeschool, if you're like me, and don't have a natural bone in your body.  I seriously won't even sit outside at restaurants, because of the bugs and lack of AC.  But this way, I know the kids are learning something about God's wonderful world!

Glue Right Award

OK, this next award isn't technically a Busy Bee, it's a Sunbeam award (which is Grade 2).  But, it was so insanely easy, I let the kids go ahead and do it anyway.  Here's our Glue Right Award lapbooks!

I wrote Glue Right in marker, and the kids traced over it in glue, then put the glitter on.  We might've not let them dry all the way... sorry about that.

OK, this award is a bit on the easy side.  You can see the requirements here.  Each of the lines (1-6) they had to demonstrate control of the glue, for a thin line, thick line, and dashed lines.  The line with the starts is the line Katie thought she did best.  Then, they had to fill a circle with glue, without going outside of the lines, glue a magazine picture, make a design with sequins, and put glue on lines (the star), and use glitter on those.  So, that's what this page shows.  

The final page is showing the craft they did (gluing buttons on a box, to make a button holder), and the Bible Verse that went with this Award (Proverbs 18:24).  

Artist Award

My denomination (Seventh Day Adventist) has a children's program called Adventurers. It's sort of like Scouts, the kids can earn Awards, they have different levels, based on grades, and they have to complete certain criteria before advancing. I wanted my kids to be part of that, but our church doesn't have a Club. Luckily, the North American Division (NAD) will let you use Adventurers as part of your homeschooling curriculum!!! (Provided you don't have a club, which we don't...)

OK, but my worry was that if we ever moved to a church that did have a club, they'd want proof that my kids have actually earned the awards that I've given them. (All right, I'll admit, that's probably not going to happen, but, still, like to cover my bases.)

Enter... you guessed it, LAPBOOKS!! Now, I'll be making a lot of these on my own, but I got my basic templates at Homeschool Share, so head there if you're feeling creative enough to make yours. These aren't very in depth, I basically just went down the awards (we're working on Busy Bees this year, Grade 1), and figured out how to make books for each requirement, or took pictures, if that would work better.

So, here's our Artist Award Lapbook!

Top picture is the front of our lapbook.  I downloaded graphics of each of the Busy Bee level awards, the Adventurer logo, and the Busy Bee logo, and I simply glued them on the top of the lapbook, so I remember what everything is for.

The second picture is the inside of the lapbook.  It has all of the requirements for the Artist Award, and if the requirement was something they couldn't answer in a mini book (like projects), I took a picture.  Those are the three projects that Danny did:  a bookmark in felt markers, a poster (the Adventurer Law) in colored pencils (OK, I wrote the Law out, he decorated, but still...), and a button box, made in glue and glitter, buttons, and markers.  They also did sponge stamping and torn paper art, but I forgot to put those pictures on the lapbooks.  

That's not photo paper, by the way, as you can probably guess with the horrible quality.  But I wasn't going to use my photo paper on this, that stuff's expensive!!

Dependability Lapbooks

Yep, yet another lapbook!!

My beloved likes for the kids to do something during Family Worship.  Our kids are active, to say the least, so having them involved, physically, really helps them retain what we're trying to teach them.  We've already done Obedience (I'll have to blog about that later, they're put away at the moment), and now we're onto Dependability or Faithfulness.  (By the way, I get these lapbooks at Homeschool Share, all of their Character Training lapbooks are on one page, which is kind of nice.  Oh, and they're free... double nice!!)

Each booklet has either something to do with Dependability, is a copywork exercise, or shows examples of Dependability.  In this one, the kids write a definition. 

This is one of the copywork pages.  They don't tell you what to copy, it's pretty much up to you on this one.  (On the Obedience lapbook, they had verses to copy.)  

Right/Wrong game:  Basically, there are just sentence strips that you cut out, and put them in the right or wrong pile.  Pretty easy, but for kids like mine, the practice reinforces the ideas.

We'll learn the Parable of the Three Servants, and their Talents...

And there are verses to learn.  You can choose KJV or NIV.  We chose NIV, I think, for this one.  

We meet dependable people in the Bible... Lydia, Timothy, and Ruth.

Overall, this lapbook isn't very big.  The Obedience one is bigger.  But, I think lapbooks are just awesome for Family Worship.  You can take the theme, and stretch it out as long as you need to.  It also appeals to all of the "learning styles."  We have the kids look up the stories and verses, and we find hymns to go with our theme.  Then we read, talk about, and fill in the lapbooks.  Everybody wins!!

Teeth Lapbook and Experiment

Every month, I've been convicted that we need to study more about health and the wonderful way God created us!  Last month was Dental Month (or something to that effect) nation wide, so it was the perfect time to study teeth!!!

We had lapbooks, provided free by Lapbook Lessons!

 

We watched a movie, and learned all about plaque and such, provided by Colgate's Bright Smiles, Bright Futures Program!  (TONS of free downloads, printables, and generally cool stuff-- including a movie!)

We did an AWESOME science experiment that we found on the Crest site, which shows the effects of soda and acids on our teeth!  (The kids loved it!)  I tried to remember to get pictures of it all, but I know I missed some steps.  Sorry.  Also, I sort of combined the Crest experiment with the one on Colgate.

THE EXPERIMENT

What you need

2 eggs

Floride toothpaste

A can of cola

Plain vinegar

First, you're supposed to coat half of each egg with the floride toothpaste, and let it sit overnight.  We found that it didn't matter much in the end.  ((shrug))  Sorta makes you wonder about all that toothpaste...

Anyway, after the eggs have a chance to sit in the floride toothpaste for a while, you wipe the toothpaste off, and put one egg in vinegar, and one in cola.  Make sure they're covered!!

When they submerge, you'll see the reaction begin!  It's especially easy to see in the vinegar.  Here's sort of what it looks like from the top:

OK, now, you let that set for quite a while.  We started the experiment first thing in the morning, and ended it right before bed.

The kids thought the cola would be worse than the vinegar.  What actually happened was:

Fruits of the Spirit Lapbooks

I got our Fruits of the Spirit Lapbooks from Lapbook Lessons.  It was a sweet, fun thing to do, and would be really good for K and up.  (Mine were 2nd grade, and they did really well, although some of it was probably a bit easy. ;) ) 

 

This is the cover.  Isn't it cute?  Luckily, our "school stuff" is mostly in our kitchen, so having fruit everywhere is generally OK.  LOL

 

This is the first "page."  It was an empty basket, and the kid's glued all of the fruit onto it.  As they did, we discussed each one, and what they meant.

 

A writing page.  They were supposed to say what each picture meant to them, and how it showed the Fruit of the Spirit, or give an example of how they can show the Fruit of the Spirit in their lives.

This was a little book and pocket, that they traced the Fruits of the Spirit on.

We did these on the first day of school, and the kids just had a blast!!
